U.S. mortgage applications fell 6% in the week ended Sept. 25 as the average 30-year conforming fixed rate climbed to 7.30%, the highest since November 2023, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey reported Sept. 30.

The contract rate on 30-year fixed mortgages with conforming balances of $832,750 or less rose to 7.30% from 7.12% the prior week, with points at 0.75 including the origination fee for loans with a 20% down payment, CNBC reported from the MBA release. It was the sixth consecutive weekly increase. Jumbo 30-year rates rose to 7.27% from 7.15%. Fifteen-year fixed rates increased to 6.56% from 6.43%, and 5/1 adjustable-rate mortgages rose to 6.47% from 6.10%. FHA-backed 30-year rates moved to 6.97% from 6.78%.

Purchase applications declined 4% on a seasonally adjusted basis (5% unadjusted week over week and 14% below the same week a year earlier). Refinance applications dropped 9% week over week and were 56% lower than a year ago. The refinance share of total applications slipped to 38.3% from 39.3%. Government refinances fell 13%, with FHA and VA activity both posting double-digit weekly declines, MBA Deputy Chief Economist Joel Kan said in comments carried by HousingWire and CNBC.

“Mortgage rates jumped to their highest level in almost three years, pushing borrowers to the sidelines,” Kan said, according to HousingWire. He added that purchase and refinance applications both slowed to their weakest weekly pace since 2025, and that ARM loans—with rates about 80 basis points below fixed-rate loans—accounted for 10.3% of applications, the highest share since October 2025.

Product mix otherwise shifted only modestly: FHA’s share held at 16.7%, VA’s share edged to 11.9% from 12.0%, and USDA’s share fell to 0.5% from 0.6%.

Rates kept rising into the following week. Mortgage News Daily printed an average 30-year fixed near 7.58% on Tuesday, Sept. 29—also the highest since November 2023—as Treasury yields recalibrated to Fed policy, growth, and inflation expectations, CNBC reported, quoting MND’s Matthew Graham. That MND figure is a separate, higher-frequency survey from the MBA weekly average for the prior week ended Sept. 25 (30-year conforming 7.30%); the two series should not be conflated.

Higher borrowing costs are colliding with still-elevated home prices. CNBC noted that national home prices were up 1.9% year over year in July on the S&P Cotality Case-Shiller index, accelerating from a 1.6% annual gain in June. Affordability pressure helps explain both the pullback in purchase demand and the rise in ARM share as some borrowers seek lower initial coupons.

Separately, Xactus’s Mortgage Intent Index—which tracks anonymized credit-pull activity—fell 7.6% week over week to 108.9, its lowest non-holiday reading of the year and about 18.6% below the same week last year, HousingWire reported, underscoring weak borrower intent heading into the fourth quarter.

For housing and mortgage-market readers, the MBA print reinforces a rate-driven demand shock rather than a sudden supply collapse: applications are lagging as coupons approach multi-year highs, while ARM mix is rising at the margin.

Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) disclosed on Sept. 29 that it has entered into $30 billion of new senior unsecured credit facilities, expanding balance-sheet flexibility as it scales manufacturing for Cybercab, Optimus, and the Tesla Semi. In a Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said no loans were outstanding at closing and that it “does not currently plan to draw on the facilities in 2026.”

As of Yahoo Finance chart data ~11:42 ET on Sept. 30, 2026: TSLA’s Sept. 29 U.S. close was $352.84, and the Sept. 30 regular-session print was about $349.23.

The package has three legs. Citibank, N.A. is administrative agent on a $20.0 billion three-year delayed-draw term loan facility. Wells Fargo Bank, National Association administers an $8.0 billion five-year revolving credit facility and a $2.0 billion 364-day revolving facility. Together, the revolvers and term loan total $30 billion of committed capacity.

Under the delayed-draw term loan, Tesla may borrow up to ten times during the 18 months after closing. Undrawn commitments automatically step down to $10.0 billion on the first anniversary, to $5.0 billion 15 months after closing, and any remaining undrawn amounts terminate 18 months after closing. Term loans mature on Sept. 29, 2029.

The five-year revolver may be drawn in U.S. dollars, pounds sterling, or euros, includes up to $500 million of letter-of-credit capacity, and matures on Sept. 29, 2031, with up to two one-year extension options subject to conditions. The 364-day facility is dollar-denominated, matures on Sept. 28, 2027, and includes a term-out option to extend outstanding loans for an additional year. Tesla may also increase revolving commitments by up to $4.0 billion across the revolvers, potentially lifting aggregate revolving capacity to $14.0 billion.

Pricing is rating-linked. Dollar borrowings accrue interest at Term SOFR or an alternate base rate plus an applicable margin tied to Tesla’s senior unsecured ratings (or issuer rating in some cases). Sterling and euro drawings under the five-year revolver use SONIA and adjusted EURIBOR, respectively, plus margin. Commitment and ticking fees also vary with credit ratings and are payable quarterly.

The credit agreements require Tesla to maintain at least $5.0 billion of consolidated liquidity and include customary covenants on liens and subsidiary indebtedness, subject to exceptions. Events of default allow lenders to terminate commitments and accelerate amounts outstanding.

Concurrently, Tesla terminated its prior $5.0 billion revolving credit agreement dated Jan. 20, 2023 (set to mature Jan. 20, 2028). The company said it had no borrowings under that facility and incurred no early-termination penalties. Some lenders or affiliates from the old revolver participate in the new facilities.

TechCrunch noted that Tesla has projected at least $25 billion of capital expenditures for 2026 and finished the second quarter with roughly $9 billion of debt and more than $40 billion of cash and investments. New manufacturing lines for Cybercab, Optimus, and Semi are among the uses that could eventually tap liquidity, though management’s 8-K language makes clear it does not currently intend to draw in 2026. Proceeds of any future draws may be used for general corporate purposes or other purposes not prohibited by the agreements.

For equity investors, the disclosure is a financing and liquidity story rather than an immediate leverage event: capacity rose, prior revolver capacity was replaced, and actual drawn debt did not increase at closing. Credit investors will watch rating trajectories, liquidity-covenant headroom, and whether CapEx or product ramps eventually pull the facilities into use.

Robinhood Markets Inc. said it plans to offer crypto perpetual futures to eligible U.S. customers in the coming months, with leverage of up to 10x on bitcoin and ether and 3x on several other tokens, according to trade-press reports of a company statement released Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026.

The perps product is not yet live for all users; timing was described as “in the coming months,” limited to eligible U.S. customers. As of Yahoo Finance chart data ~11:42 ET on Sept. 30, 2026, Robinhood equity (HOOD) traded near $114.47 (day open about $122.61; prior close $116.22)—an optional session reaction print, not a company metric. Separately, CoinDesk said rival perps-exchange token lighter (LIT) lost about 17% over 24 hours after the announcement; that is a secondary market print.

The Block, citing Robinhood’s Tuesday statement, reported that eligible users would be able to take long or short positions on perpetuals for bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH), Solana (SOL), XRP, Dogecoin (DOGE), ADA, LINK, and HYPE. Leverage would reach up to 10x on BTC and ETH perpetuals and 3x on the other listed perpetual futures. The offering is to be supported by Bitstamp, with a promotional trading fee of 0.01% per trade through the end of 2026, The Block said.

Robinhood described order tools including stop-loss and take-profit orders, real-time liquidation-price tracking, and risk alerts, according to The Block’s paraphrase of the company statement. CEO Vlad Tenev was quoted on X via The Block as saying Robinhood is bringing “America its first true perps” with no expiry and P&L settled every 15 minutes, calling it a “new chapter for U.S. derivatives.”

The Block also noted industry context: Ondo Perps CEO David Wells told The Block in a Tuesday interview that he sees a “huge opportunity” for the U.S. perps market as regulatory and product avenues open.

Alongside perps, Robinhood announced plans for 24/7 trading of select U.S. equities and ETFs, pending regulatory review. That would extend the firm’s existing “24 Hour Market,” which currently runs from Sunday 8 p.m. ET through Friday 8 p.m. ET for hundreds of stocks and ETFs. Weekend 24/7 trading would start with a curated list and be supported by Bruce ATS, an alternative trading system, The Block reported.

The company also introduced Robinhood Agents, allowing users to build AI agents in-app for strategy development, research, or automated trading. The feature builds on an agentic trading service launched in May; Robinhood said more than 150,000 users have opened such accounts since launch, with agents using its tools nearly 30 million times a day. Abhishek Fatehpuria, VP of product management, was quoted saying safety and security are “at its core” as the firm sets standards for agentic finance.

CoinDesk corroborated the perps leverage tiers and related product announcements in Sept. 30 coverage. Separate CoinDesk markets coverage linked the Robinhood perps plan to the LIT token drop noted above.

Perpetual futures involve substantial leverage risk, including liquidation. This article summarizes company plans reported by trade press; it is not an offer of derivatives, not personalized investment advice, and does not recommend trading HOOD, crypto perps, or any token.

Bitcoin traded in a consolidation band on Wednesday, Sept. 30, after failing to hold an eight-month high near $87,300–$87,400 earlier in the late-September stretch, as rising U.S. Treasury yields and a key inflation print kept risk assets on edge.

As of CoinDesk ~6:11 a.m. EDT on Sept. 30, 2026: bitcoin traded at about $83,164 (−0.57% since midnight UTC) in the European morning, after a Tuesday U.S.-session peak near $84,400, according to CoinDesk markets coverage. That CoinDesk print is the single labeled live as-of for this article; spot crypto moves continuously across venues.

CoinDesk tied the soft tone to multi-decade highs in long-term U.S. yields: the 30-year Treasury yield crossed 5.6% on Tuesday (highest since June 2002 in that coverage), and the 10-year approached a 2007 high near 5.3%. Traders were also positioned ahead of the Bureau of Economic Analysis personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index due before the Wall Street open—the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge.

Derivatives positioning pointed to cooler leverage even as spot narratives from late September remained mixed. CoinDesk, citing CoinGlass, said market-wide futures open interest slipped to about $147 billion from nearly $150 billion two days earlier, with liquidations roughly halved to $196 million. Bitcoin futures open interest fell to about 625,000 BTC, described as the lowest since Jan. 1, while ether futures open interest slid to about 13.08 million ETH, the lowest since early March in that report. Implied volatility remained subdued, CoinDesk said.

A companion CoinDesk piece highlighted on-chain analytics from CryptoQuant (a third-party research firm, not an exchange primary). CryptoQuant’s “Bull Score” stood at 90 out of 100 after bitcoin broke above its 365-day moving average, yet the same firm estimated spot demand had contracted by roughly 170,000 BTC over 30 days and that growth in speculative futures demand plunged about 90% in 15 days (from about 164,000 BTC on Sept. 14 to about 16,000 BTC on Sept. 29). Julio Moreno, CryptoQuant’s head of research, was quoted as saying that without fresh demand, rallies struggle to extend. Those indicators are analytical estimates and should be labeled as such; they are not transaction prices.

Structurally, CoinDesk characterized bitcoin as stuck in consolidation since a failed breakout attempt around $87,300 on Sept. 21. Broader crypto was mixed: CoinDesk 100 constituents were split roughly evenly higher and lower in the European morning piece, while the CoinDesk DeFi index fell about 2.3% over 24 hours in that report.

This is market news, not investment advice. Cryptocurrency prices are volatile; past levels do not predict future returns. No personalized buy or sell recommendation is implied.

FactSet Research Systems Inc. (NYSE/NASDAQ: FDS) reported fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results on Wednesday, highlighting mid-single-digit revenue growth, 7% organic annual subscription value (ASV) growth, and initial fiscal 2027 guidance centered on slower ASV expansion.

As of Yahoo Finance chart data ~11:42 ET on Sept. 30, 2026: FDS traded near $268.65 in the regular session after a Sept. 29 prior daily close of $259.97. Earnings were released at 7:00 ET the same morning.

In its GlobeNewswire release, FactSet said GAAP revenues for the quarter ended Aug. 31, 2026 rose 6.3% year over year to $634.7 million, with organic revenues up 7.1%. Organic ASV increased $168.2 million, or 7.0%, year over year to $2,568.2 million. Reported ASV was $2,565.2 million at Aug. 31, 2026.

GAAP diluted EPS for the fourth quarter was $3.41, down from $4.03 a year earlier, while adjusted diluted EPS rose 11.6% to $4.52. GAAP operating margin was 24.7% versus 29.7% in the prior-year period; adjusted operating margin was 33.0% versus 33.8%. The company attributed lower GAAP margins in part to higher employee compensation costs, including one-time restructuring charges and ASV-linked incentive plans.

For full fiscal 2026, GAAP revenue reached $2.476 billion, up 6.7%, continuing what FactSet described as 47 consecutive years of increased revenues. Full-year GAAP diluted EPS was $14.57 (versus $15.55), and adjusted diluted EPS was $18.01, up 6.1%—the company’s 30th consecutive year of higher adjusted diluted EPS, according to the release. Full-year GAAP operating margin was 28.3%; adjusted operating margin was 34.5%.

Capital returns remained sizable. FactSet said it returned more than $179 million to shareholders in the fourth quarter, including $138 million of share repurchases (552,064 shares at an average price of $249.90) and more than $41 million in dividends. For the full year, the company returned $808 million to shareholders and marked its 27th consecutive year of dividend increases. Free cash flow was $177.3 million in the fourth quarter and $707.5 million for the year.

CEO Sanoke Viswanathan said results were “highlighted by a record increase in organic ASV for both the fourth quarter and fiscal year with continued momentum across our AI and data solutions.” The company said AI solutions ASV added in fiscal 2026 more than doubled year over year, and annual ASV retention remained above 95%.

By region, organic ASV growth was 7.1% in the Americas, 5.2% in EMEA, and 10.6% in Asia Pacific, per the release’s segment table.

Fiscal 2027 guidance issued with the results:

Organic ASV growth: 5.0%–6.5%

Revenue: $2.60–$2.625 billion

GAAP operating margin: 31.0%–32.0%; adjusted: 34.75%–35.25%

GAAP diluted EPS: $17.00–$17.50; adjusted: $19.25–$19.65

Carnival Corporation (NYSE: CCL) reported all-time-high third-quarter results on Sept. 29 and raised its full-year adjusted net income outlook, saying stronger yields and cost discipline more than offset a spike in fuel prices.

As of Yahoo Finance chart data ~11:42 ET on Sept. 30, 2026: CCL’s prior daily close (Tuesday, Sept. 29) was $25.11, and the Sept. 30 regular-session print was about $25.13. Secondary press had cited the Sept. 29 close near $25.11 with a roughly 13% session gain after the premarket release; the Yahoo prior-close figure locks that Tuesday print.

According to the company’s third-quarter 2026 earnings materials and wire syndication, net income attributable to Carnival Corporation Ltd. reached an all-time high of $1.9 billion for the quarter ended Aug. 31, 2026, with adjusted net income of $2.0 billion. Diluted earnings per share were $1.40; adjusted EPS was $1.43. Total revenues were about $8.44 billion, and adjusted EBITDA was about $3.0 billion, in line with last year’s historic high and $110 million better than June guidance, the company said.

Constant-currency net yields rose 2.4% year over year to an all-time high, more than a point better than June guidance. Gross margin yields fell 1.3%, which management attributed to higher fuel prices. Cruise costs per available lower berth day (ALBD) rose 4.2%, also driven by fuel; adjusted cruise costs excluding fuel per ALBD in constant currency increased 1.8%, one point better than June guidance. Fuel consumption per ALBD improved 3.8% versus the prior year.

Chief Executive Officer Josh Weinstein said the company delivered “another quarter of top and bottom-line records, with accelerating demand and even stronger cost discipline driving results ahead of our expectations.”

On bookings, Carnival said third-quarter customer deposits hit a record $7.6 billion, up $0.5 billion from the prior-year record despite flat capacity growth over the next twelve months. Management added that booked occupancy and pricing for full-year 2027 are at record levels, and that 2028 is also off to a strong start at higher occupancy and prices than a year earlier.

For full-year 2026, Carnival said it expects an operational improvement of more than $150 million in adjusted net income versus June guidance, overcoming about $150 million of higher fuel-price impact. Constant-currency net yields are expected up about 2.3% versus record 2025 levels (about 0.5 percentage points better than June guidance). Adjusted cruise costs excluding fuel per ALBD in constant currency are expected up about 2.2%, also better than June guidance. Fourth-quarter constant-currency net yields are guided up about 1.7% versus 2025 record levels.

Capital returns remained active. The company said it completed about $1.2 billion of share repurchases year to date, including nearly $800 million since the start of the third quarter, and distributed $204 million in dividends in the quarter ($618 million year to date). During the quarter it also redeemed $500 million of 7% coupon notes. S&P upgraded Carnival’s credit rating, leaving the company with no remaining secured debt, management said.

Fuel and currency were a headwind in the quarter: adjusted EPS was in line with the prior year despite a $0.10 ($131 million) unfavorable net impact from fuel prices and currency rates, according to the release.

Sellers cut asking prices on a larger share of U.S. listings in September while fewer homes moved under contract, as higher mortgage rates constrained buyers even as inventory edged closer to pre-pandemic norms, according to Realtor.com’s September 2026 Monthly Housing Trends Report released Sept. 30.

The share of active listings with a price reduction rose to 20.8%, up 0.9 percentage points from a year earlier and the highest September reading since 2018. Active inventory increased 5.4% year over year to 1,161,615 homes, narrowing the gap versus typical 2019 levels to 9.1%—the first time that shortfall has fallen below 10% in the current recovery, the company said in a PR Newswire release.

Homes under contract fell 4.1% from a year ago, a second consecutive monthly decline and the steepest annual drop since March 2025. The national median list price was $419,250, down 1.2% from August and 1.4% year over year—the 11th straight month of annual list-price declines. Median days on market stood at 61, one day longer than in August but one day fewer than a year earlier. Price per square foot declined 1.7% year over year.

“September’s housing data shows that buyers are gaining leverage, but higher mortgage rates are limiting how much of that opportunity they can use,” said Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com. Inventory is improving and more sellers are adjusting prices, she said, yet the pending-sales decline shows affordability remains a central constraint as the fall season begins.

New listings slipped 0.7% year over year to under 395,000 (394,830), even as active stock rose at the fastest annual pace in six months. The Northeast and Midwest led inventory gains (+11.6% and +11.3%), with the West up 6.2% and the South up 2.6%. Forty-three of the 50 largest metros had more homes for sale than a year earlier.

Senior economist Jake Krimmel emphasized that the inventory improvement is arriving as demand cools in response to higher borrowing costs, not because a new wave of sellers is rushing to list. About 5.6% of homes on the market were delisted in September, roughly in line with a year ago, suggesting sellers are adjusting via price cuts rather than a broad retreat.

All four Census regions posted a higher price-cut share than a year ago for the first time in 2026. Cuts were most common in the West (22.8% of listings), followed by the South (21.6%), Midwest (20.7%), and Northeast (15.2%). Among the 50 largest metros, Salt Lake City led at 33.6%, followed by Denver (32.1%) and Portland, Ore. (31.6%). Price reductions were least common in New York (10.3%), Hartford, Conn. (12.6%), and Buffalo, N.Y. (12.9%). Thirty-six of the top-50 metros had a higher price-cut share than a year ago, up from 27 in August.

Regional list-price trends diverged. Median list prices fell year over year in the Northeast (−3.8%), South (−2.4%), and West (−0.8%), while the Midwest was flat. On a price-per-square-foot basis, 37 of the 50 largest metros posted annual declines, led by Austin (−8.4%), Tampa (−6.0%), and San Francisco (−4.3%).

Realtor.com economists said the coming weeks will test whether deeper or repeated price cuts can revive contracts, or whether sellers begin delisting at a higher rate if elevated mortgage rates persist. The report’s Best Time to Buy window is framed as Sept. 27–Oct. 3 for well-prepared buyers who can navigate higher financing costs—marketing context from the company, not a forecast of returns.

The metrics cover active inventory of existing single-family homes and condos/townhomes listed on Realtor.com; new construction is excluded unless listed via an MLS that feeds the site. Pending stock measures homes under contract regardless of when they entered that status.

OpenAI is pursuing at least $30 billion in new private capital at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion excluding the fresh money, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg News and relayed by Reuters, TechCrunch, and other outlets on Sept. 29–30. The ChatGPT maker has not confirmed the talks, and secondary reports stress that discussions remain early and terms could change.

The reported package is framed as bridge financing after Chief Executive Sam Altman said earlier this month that OpenAI would not list in 2026, citing artificial-intelligence safety concerns. A public offering had been widely expected this year following a March financing that, according to the same Bloomberg-sourced accounts, raised $122 billion in committed capital and valued the company at $852 billion including that capital. Private-market valuations are not SEC-filed facts; they reflect negotiated deal terms reported by journalists citing unnamed sources and can shift before any closing.

Bloomberg previously reported that OpenAI had considered a smaller raise near a $1.2 trillion valuation. The higher ask now under discussion would, if completed at the stated level, put the company’s implied pre-money mark above rival Anthropic’s most recent private-market valuation cited in secondary coverage. Anthropic has separately been reported as preparing a possible November initial public offering with a valuation target above $2 trillion—again, prospectus and market-talk figures that should not be treated as completed transactions.

Revenue momentum is part of the narrative investors are weighing. Bloomberg-sourced accounts say OpenAI’s annualized revenue run rate climbed more than 70% since July and exceeded $40 billion over the summer; some Reuters roundups circulating Sept. 29 put the run rate nearer $70 billion. Those figures come from private-company reporting, not audited public filings, and outlets do not always reconcile the same ARR snapshot. Editors should treat run-rate claims as attributed secondary reporting pending any company confirmation.

Competitive pressure remains intense. Enterprise demand for coding and agent products has lifted both OpenAI and Anthropic in 2026, while large technology partners and cloud providers continue to finance the compute build-out that underpins model training. OpenAI’s Microsoft partnership remains a strategic backdrop for any private raise, though Microsoft is not named as the lead investor in the Bloomberg accounts summarized by wire and trade press.

Product news on the same calendar overlapped the funding story. CoinDesk’s Sept. 30 wrap, summarizing Bloomberg, also described OpenAI unveiling a “Dots” AI agent and related consumer tiers around its DevDay event in San Francisco. Those product details are separate from the financing talks and should not be read as evidence that a round has closed.

For capital-markets readers, the distinction between reported private-market negotiations and completed, disclosed financings is material. OpenAI is still privately held; there is no public equity ticker, and no Form S-1 has been filed for a 2026 listing under the Altman timeline. A bridge round, if it materializes, would extend the private runway while the company manages safety workstreams, compute costs, and competition for talent and enterprise contracts.

Investors tracking the AI complex through public proxies—Microsoft, Nvidia, and other suppliers—should not equate secondary reports of OpenAI’s ask with a marked-to-market public valuation. Private rounds can reprice quickly, and competing narratives about Anthropic’s IPO path add another layer of uncertainty to relative positioning in the sector.

What to watch next: confirmation or denial from OpenAI; named lead investors and final pre-/post-money math; any SEC registration activity from Anthropic; and whether ARR figures are restated in company materials. Until then, the $30 billion / $1.4 trillion package remains Bloomberg-sourced private-market reporting—not an official company filing.

U.S. consumer confidence deteriorated sharply in September, according to The Conference Board, as households cited higher fuel costs, rising interest-rate expectations, and softer views of business and labor conditions.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index fell 6.7 points to 81.9 (1985=100) in September from a downwardly referenced August reading of 88.6, the organization said in a release distributed via PR Newswire on Sept. 29, 2026 at 10:00 ET. The Present Situation Index, which reflects assessments of current business and labor-market conditions, dropped 7.9 points to 109.3. The Expectations Index, based on the short-term outlook for income, business, and labor-market conditions, fell 5.9 points to 63.6—its third consecutive monthly decline.

The survey window for the preliminary September results ran from Sept. 1 through Sept. 23, a period that included a federal funds rate increase and ongoing geopolitical tensions, the Conference Board noted.

“The Consumer Confidence Index deteriorated notably in September, following two prior months of softening,” said Dana M. Peterson, chief economist at The Conference Board. “The Present Situation Index fell sharply, while the Expectations Index slipped further into negative territory. Consumer appraisals of current business conditions became negative for the first time since September 2024. Perceptions of the current labor market also worsened, though remained within positive territory.”

Peterson said write-in responses were mostly pessimistic, with references to prices, the high cost of goods and services, and oil and gasoline prices rising to new heights amid September’s surge in fuel costs. Comments about war and conflict eased but stayed elevated; politics, trade, and employment were also frequently cited.

On present conditions, net views of current business conditions—the share saying conditions are “good” versus “bad”—declined 3.4 percentage points to −1.9%. The labor-market differential—the share saying jobs are “plentiful” minus the share saying jobs are “hard to get”—retreated 2.5 percentage points to +1.7%. Looking six months ahead, net expectations for business conditions dipped 3.2 percentage points to −9.5%, and net labor-market expectations declined 3.1 percentage points to −14.4%. Net expectations for household income fell 3.0 percentage points but remained positive at +2.5%.

Inflation and rate expectations also hardened. Consumers’ average 12-month inflation expectation rose 0.3 percentage point to 6.1%, while the median rose 0.3 percentage point to 5.1%. The share of consumers anticipating higher interest rates over the next 12 months jumped 5.2 percentage points to 68.4%. Optimism that stock prices would rise over the next year moderated, though a majority still expected gains.

The Conference Board also reported that net views of families’ current financial situation turned negative in September for only the second time since that question was introduced four years ago. Plans to purchase autos and homes declined slightly on a six-month moving-average basis, and expected spending on many discretionary services moderated, though vacation plans held up, with 42.6% of consumers planning a vacation in the next six months.

Secondary coverage, including CNBC, linked the print to escalating concerns about prices and jobs.

The Federal Reserve Board on Wednesday finalized two rules designed to make its annual supervisory stress test more transparent and to smooth year-to-year swings in large banks’ stress capital buffer requirements.

In a press release dated Sept. 30, 2026 and timed for 9:00 a.m. EDT, the Board said the package is largely similar to proposals issued in 2025. Taken together, the changes “are likely to reduce year-over-year volatility in capital requirements by approximately 50 percent and are not expected to materially affect aggregate capital requirements,” according to the Board.

The first final rule requires the Board to invite public input each year on stress-test scenarios and any material model changes. It also updates the framework that guides the design of hypothetical scenarios and adopts the models that will be used for the 2027 stress test. Several calendar adjustments are included as well.

For banks with large trading books, the rule updates the global market shock component. Those firms will now be tested against two global market shock components each year, and the Board will use the shock that produces the largest losses for each firm when calculating that firm’s stress-test results.

The second final rule changes how stress capital buffer requirements are calculated. Starting in 2028, the Board will average results from the two most recent annual supervisory stress tests for firms that took the test in both years. The Board said averaging begins in 2028 so that only models that have incorporated public input are used in the buffer calculation.

Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle W. Bowman framed the package as preserving the test’s resilience while improving accountability. “The stress test is an essential component of our regulatory capital framework,” Bowman said in the release. “Today’s changes preserve its resilience by ensuring that it is transparent, granular, and risk-sensitive. The public will now have greater assurance that the risks banks take will be reflected appropriately in their stress test losses and their capital requirements.”

Separately, the Board requested public comment on a proposal to revise its noninterest income model so the stress test better captures differences in how banks generate fee income. If adopted, the adjustments would replace the current model that projects each bank’s fee income under stress. Comments are due 60 days after publication in the Federal Register.

The Board’s stress tests are intended to ensure that large banks remain sufficiently capitalized and able to lend to households and businesses even in a severe recession. In December 2024, the Board had announced it would modify the test to improve its resilience; Wednesday’s finalization is the formal endpoint of that redesign track for the transparency and buffer-averaging pieces.

Wire coverage, including Reuters, framed the action as an overhaul of the bank stress-test regime with implications for how large U.S. banks plan capital. This article is limited to the Board’s stated rules and estimates; it does not forecast individual bank capital ratios or recommend securities.

Supporting materials linked from the Board release include Federal Register notices on capital-plan and stress-capital-buffer modifications, enhanced transparency of supervisory stress-test models and scenarios, a request for comment on 2027 model changes, and documents summarizing stress-test changes and effective dates.

Tesla has launched lower-cost trims for the Model Y and Model 3, labeled as “Standard” versions, with prices starting near $40,000. The trims remove several features and offer only a modest $5,000 reduction compared with higher-tier models. The savings are limited by the expiration of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, which had previously reduced effective costs for buyers.

Dan Ives, Wedbush analyst, said the price reduction may help Tesla maintain quarterly deliveries near 500,000 vehicles, but the launch is unlikely to attract many new buyers. “The price point is only $5,000 lower than previous Model 3s and Ys, which limits its ability to drive new demand,” he wrote. Tesla shares fell about 4% following the announcement.

The Standard trims remove several features from higher-tier vehicles. Leather seats, heated rear rows, power-adjustable steering wheels, LED light bars, and rear-seat entertainment screens are excluded. The Model Y loses its panoramic glass roof, while the Model 3 keeps it. Both trims reduce driving range by roughly 20 miles and remove Tesla’s Autosteer driver-assist system, which allows partial automated driving. The vehicles otherwise maintain the same design and core functionality as their higher-end counterparts.

Tesla had previously planned a fully new $25,000 model but redirected resources to robotaxi development and AI integration. The Standard trims allow the company to maintain production and delivery targets without introducing a completely new vehicle.

On the same day, Tesla released Full Self-Driving (FSD) version 14.1, its first major update in a year. The update includes improvements for detour handling, emergency-vehicle detection, and reduced driver intervention. Analysts view AI and autonomous driving programs as the primary drivers of Tesla’s future growth, with the Standard trims mainly serving to maintain production and delivery metrics.

Tesla faces competitive pressure internationally. In China, BYD’s small EVs start at $8,000, and the $25,000 Seagull and Xiaomi YU7 at $35,000 undercut Tesla’s Standard trims. In Europe, similar cost-competitive EVs are entering the market. In the U.S., GM and Ford are rolling out EVs priced near $30,000, challenging Tesla’s affordability positioning.

Wedbush maintains an Outperform rating on Tesla, with a $600 price target, but notes that the Standard trims “remain relatively high versus other vehicles on the market.” Analysts view the trims as a tactical step to sustain delivery numbers and investor confidence rather than a true expansion of the mass-market customer base.

The company’s previous strategy focused on adding features and range, while the Standard trims reduce content. This approach keeps assembly lines moving and maintains quarterly delivery figures without launching a new vehicle.

Musk’s compensation plan is tied to operational milestones, including vehicle deliveries and autonomous system rollouts. Shareholders will vote soon on his proposed $1 trillion pay package. The release of Standard trims, early FSD updates, and Musk’s personal $1 billion share purchase contribute to maintaining investor confidence ahead of the vote.

While Tesla remains dominant in the U.S., its position is weakening in global markets. Competitors in China and Europe are offering fully functional EVs at lower price points, leaving Tesla’s Standard trims less competitive internationally.

The Standard trims provide only modest savings, remove premium features, and maintain production targets. Tesla continues to focus on autonomous vehicle programs, robotaxis, and AI-driven technology, with the lower-cost trims supporting volume and investor sentiment while these initiatives develop.

Apple, Nvidia, and other major technology companies are getting a temporary reprieve as the US government exempts several key electronic products from the latest wave of tariffs. The decision, issued by US Customs and Border Protection and backdated to April 5, removes new tariff burdens from a wide range of imported consumer electronics and manufacturing tools.

The exemptions cover products like smartphones, laptops, memory chips, computer processors, hard drives, and flat-screen displays. These items were previously included in tariffs of up to 125% on goods from China and a 10% general tariff affecting imports from most other countries. Most of these products are not manufactured in the United States, which had raised concerns about cost increases for both companies and consumers.

Consumers and Companies Get Breathing Room

For many Americans, the announcement means they won’t see immediate price hikes on phones, laptops, and other everyday tech. Some had rushed to make purchases in recent weeks, worried that tariffs could push prices higher. For Apple, whose iPhones and iPads are assembled primarily in China, the exemption helps avoid supply chain disruptions and potential pricing issues in the short term.

Nvidia also stands to benefit, especially as it continues to ramp up production of high-performance graphics chips for AI applications. Many of the servers and components that support AI infrastructure are built in countries like Taiwan and Mexico, both of which are covered under the exemption.

Affected Imports Total Nearly $400 Billion

According to 2024 trade data, the exclusions impact approximately $390 billion in US imports, including more than $100 billion from China. Smartphones alone made up over $41 billion in imports from China last year, and computers accounted for another $36 billion. Together, the exempted electronics represented about 22% of total Chinese imports to the US in 2024.

These categories play a central role in both consumer markets and business operations. Their exclusion from the new tariffs may help maintain stability in areas such as cloud computing, data centers, and software development—sectors that rely heavily on high-performance hardware.

Semiconductor Equipment Included in Exemptions

Beyond consumer tech, the exemptions also apply to machines used in semiconductor manufacturing—equipment often produced by companies like ASML in the Netherlands and Tokyo Electron in Japan. These tools are critical to building chip production facilities in the US.

Firms like TSMC, Intel, and Samsung have all announced large investments in new chip plants, supported in part by funding from the 2022 Chips and Science Act. Without these tools, their timelines and budgets would face significant challenges.

This decision helps clear a path for these projects to move forward without sudden cost increases on essential manufacturing equipment. It also aligns with ongoing efforts to expand domestic chip production and reduce dependency on overseas supply chains for critical components.

Temporary Relief Amid Ongoing Trade Tensions

While the exemptions are significant, they do not represent a change in long-term trade direction. The White House has indicated that these products may still face tariffs under future measures that are more narrowly focused on certain industries, such as semiconductors.

A new investigation into imported chips is already underway and could lead to additional duties not just on the semiconductors themselves, but also on products that contain them. Industry insiders expect further announcements in the coming weeks or months.

Additionally, the exemption does not apply to the separate 20% tariff introduced to pressure China on issues related to fentanyl. Nor does it roll back earlier tariffs from previous trade rounds. Many categories of Chinese goods—particularly industrial and capital equipment—remain subject to elevated duties.

Apple and Other Firms Still Face Long-Term Questions

Although this move helps ease immediate concerns, companies like Apple remain in a delicate position. Unlike competitors such as Samsung, which manufactures much of its hardware outside of China, Apple is still heavily reliant on Chinese assembly lines. Relocating final production for products like the iPhone is not a quick or simple task, despite pressure from policymakers to reduce overseas dependencies.

Tech industry groups and corporate lobbyists have warned that making rapid changes to global supply chains could be costly and inefficient, especially when much of the required infrastructure still resides overseas.

The pause in tariffs gives companies some time to manage production planning without the added strain of new taxes. But the situation remains fluid, and further changes to US trade rules could arrive at any time.

New York lawmakers are in a rush to find a new source of money to fill a $1 billion yearly gap after Governor Kathy Hochul suddenly stopped a congestion pricing plan. This plan was supposed to pay for important transit improvements.

Funding Problems

On Thursday, lawmakers dropped a plan to raise taxes on New York City businesses through the payroll mobility tax, according to insiders. Now, Democrats are working on a new plan to find other sources of money to make sure the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) can get bonds to fund its projects.

“It’s a plan that promises a billion dollars for the MTA in next year’s budget, but without explaining where it will come from,” said Michael Gianaris, state senate deputy majority leader, on Thursday.

Political Worries

Democrats don’t have enough votes yet to pass the new funding plan, insiders say. The idea to raise taxes on businesses was scrapped because of concerns about its impact during an election year. This worry also influenced Hochul’s decision to pause the congestion pricing plan.

Extended Session

The legislative session was supposed to end on Thursday but will now continue into the weekend. This shows the rushed and unplanned nature of Hochul’s decision, which left the MTA without funding just weeks before the plan was set to start. The congestion pricing plan would have charged most drivers $15 to enter Manhattan’s business district, aiming to reduce traffic, improve air quality, and fund crucial transit projects.

Governor’s Decision

Hochul said she made the decision to help New Yorkers dealing with rising costs and after talking to commuters who were worried about the extra $15 fee. The MTA, which runs the city’s subways, buses, and commuter trains, planned to use the $1 billion from the congestion pricing to get $15 billion for upgrading subway signals and tracks, improving accessibility, and extending the Second Avenue subway into Harlem.

“We need to make sure the MTA’s capital plan moves forward,” said Assemblyman David Weprin, a Democrat from Queens. “We’ll work hard to find the $1 billion over the next few days. I believe we’ll succeed.”

Future Plans

At a press conference on Friday evening, Hochul promised to find other ways to fund the MTA’s capital plan during this pause but didn’t provide specific details. She also defended her decision to stop the plan without the MTA board’s approval, which has sparked a debate about the governor’s powers.

“My job is to make sure life in our state isn’t made harder or more expensive for New Yorkers,” Hochul said.

Nvidia is on the brink of overtaking Apple to become the world's second-most valuable company, thanks to its growing importance in the AI industry. This shift could push Apple, a longtime market leader, further down the rankings.

Nvidia's advanced chips, crucial for AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT, have caused its stock value to almost triple in the past year, reaching $2.72 trillion. Meanwhile, Apple has faced declining iPhone sales and tough competition in China, causing it to fall behind Microsoft earlier this year. Apple's current value stands at $2.93 trillion.

"Apple has been a leader in innovation for a long time, but recently, its pace has slowed," said Brian Mulberry, a portfolio manager at Zacks Investment Management. "In contrast, Nvidia has successfully capitalized on several growth opportunities, from gaming to cryptocurrency and now AI, leading to rapid growth."

Nvidia's success has significantly impacted the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indexes, helping drive U.S. stocks to record highs. The company's value surged from $1 trillion to $2 trillion faster than Amazon, Google’s parent company Alphabet, or Saudi Aramco.

Over the past year, Nvidia has consistently exceeded Wall Street's high expectations for revenue and profit. The demand for its graphics processors has been so high that supply can’t keep up, as many tech companies rush to use AI technologies.

Despite its rising stock price, Nvidia's forward earnings valuation has decreased. It now trades at 37 times forward earnings, compared to 48 times a year ago, according to LSEG data.

Nvidia is also popular in the derivatives market. The GraniteShares 2x Long NVDA Daily ETF, which tracks twice the daily percentage change in Nvidia's stock, has become the largest single-stock ETF. This fund saw $1 billion in daily turnover for the first time last week, with total net assets reaching a record $2.82 billion, according to Lipper data.

Options traders are very optimistic about Nvidia, with a significant increase in trading volumes, especially for call options. Last Thursday marked the fifth consecutive session with over a million Nvidia call options traded, the longest streak in the company’s history, based on a Reuters analysis of Trade Alert data.

U.S. stock futures indicated further losses on Thursday due to ongoing fears about sustained high interest rates and a significant drop in Salesforce (CRM) shares, which dampened investor confidence.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F) fell 0.9%, following a 400-point loss on Wednesday. S&P 500 futures (ES=F) declined by 0.4%, and Nasdaq 100 futures (NQ=F) were down around 0.3%.

The stock market has been under pressure due to renewed concerns about the Federal Reserve's potential delay in cutting interest rates, prompted by inflation data that remains higher than expected. Additionally, hopes for a broad market rally driven by Nvidia's (NVDA) strong earnings were not realized.

These interest rate fears have pushed U.S. bond yields to their highest levels since early May, with the 10-year Treasury yield (^TNX) rising above 4.5%. While it slightly retreated on Thursday, it stayed above 4.6%.

Salesforce added to the market's woes, with its shares dropping 15% in pre-market trading after the company projected its slowest sales growth in history.

Attention is now on Thursday’s economic data releases, as investors look for signs of the U.S. economy's resilience, which might complicate the Fed's efforts to lower interest rates. Reports on first-quarter GDP and weekly jobless claims are expected.

Retail earnings reports provided additional insights into consumer behavior and economic health. Kohl's (KSS) shares plummeted after reporting an unexpected quarterly loss and reducing its annual sales forecast. Best Buy (BBY) also reported a larger-than-expected decline in comparable sales as consumers became more cautious with their spending.

Chewy's Unexpected Surge

Chewy (CHWY) experienced a 27% jump in its share price after reporting better-than-expected quarterly results, though shares dipped slightly pre-market. Despite a year-over-year decline in active customers, the company's margin improvement and positive demand outlook impressed investors. CEO Sumit Singh emphasized the improving demand environment and detailed plans to open additional veterinary clinics, aiming to integrate them with Chewy’s online services.

Increase in PC Demand

HP Inc. (HPQ) shares rose 3% in pre-market trading after reporting strong quarterly results. CEO Enrique Lores mentioned an uptick in companies upgrading computers ahead of the October 2025 end-of-support deadline for Windows 10. The introduction of HP’s AI-powered PCs is expected to further fuel this upgrade cycle. Analyst Amit Daryanani from Evercore ISI believes HP is well-positioned to benefit from this trend, predicting growth acceleration in the latter half of the year and into FY25.

Challenges for Salesforce

Salesforce (CRM) shares dropped 16% in pre-market trading following a disappointing earnings report. The company's performance obligations grew by 10%, falling short of the expected 11%, with the earnings call highlighting economic concerns affecting deal closures. Citi analyst Tyler Radke noted that the weak second-quarter guidance could indicate ongoing challenges such as competition and deal delays. With slowing growth and uncertain forecasts, analysts remain cautious, awaiting a more stable economic environment before becoming more optimistic about Salesforce's outlook.

Italy's government, led by Premier Giorgia Meloni, has given the green light to a 24 billion-euro budget for the upcoming year. This budget aims to boost public health services, encourage families to have more children, and provide financial support to low- and medium-wage earners.

Giorgia Meloni emphasized that this budget is aligned with the government's priorities. Despite an expected increase of 13 billion euros in debt payments due to rising interest rates, Meloni described the budget as both "serious" and "realistic."

Key measures include a reduction in payroll taxes, which will add an extra 100 euros per month to the income of 14 million Italians. This move is intended to increase spending power, especially in the face of rising inflation.

The budget also introduces payroll tax breaks for women with at least two children and guarantees free nursery school from the second child onwards. These measures are aimed at dispelling the notion that having children hinders professional opportunities.

Around 3 billion euros have been allocated to enhance Italy's public health services, with the goal of reducing wait times for critical medical services, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who leads the Forza Italia party, criticized the lengthy waiting lists for medical services, calling them a "national shame." He emphasized the urgency of timely medical evaluations.

The budget also includes an increase in the minimum pension and a reduction in the annual fee supporting RAI state television, from 90 euros to 70 euros for households.

In a significant infrastructure development, Meloni's Cabinet has approved funds for the construction of a long-debated bridge connecting mainland Italy to Sicily. This project holds special significance for League leader Matteo Salvini, who serves as the infrastructure minister. Salvini has announced plans to begin work on the bridge next year.

Negotiations are set to resume today between the White House and congressional Republicans as they work towards a deal to increase the US government's debt ceiling. With just a week remaining before a potential catastrophic default, Democratic President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, find themselves at odds over spending, taxes, and work requirements for anti-poverty programs. Nevertheless, both sides express optimism that they can find common ground following productive discussions held by their respective negotiating teams on Wednesday.

McCarthy, the leading Republican in Congress, stated during a press briefing that they will continue working towards a solution after his team concluded a four-hour meeting at the White House.

Time is of the essence as the Treasury Department warns that the United States could run out of funds to meet its financial obligations as early as June 1, just seven days from now, if the debt ceiling is not raised. A default by the US could have severe consequences, including disrupting global financial markets and potentially pushing the country into a recession.

On Wednesday, credit rating agency Fitch announced that it had placed the United States' "AAA" credit rating on negative watch due to escalating political disputes concerning the nation's debt limit. Fitch had previously taken similar action in October 2013.

Fitch stated in its announcement, "The brinkmanship over the debt ceiling, failure of the US authorities to meaningfully tackle medium-term fiscal challenges ... and a growing debt burden signal downside risks to US creditworthiness."

The prolonged standoff has raised concerns on Wall Street, causing a decline in US stocks and an increase in borrowing costs for the nation.

Passing any agreement through the Republican-controlled House and the Democratic-controlled Senate will require several days. It is customary for lawmakers to raise the self-imposed debt limit to cover the expenses of already approved spending and tax cuts.

Representative Steve Scalise, the second-ranking House Republican, stated that members of the House will be given three days to review any debt-ceiling bill before casting their vote. In the Senate, a single member can delay action for days.

Although the House was scheduled to begin a week-long Memorial Day holiday recess on Thursday, Scalise warned lawmakers to be prepared for a recall vote if necessary.

McCarthy has emphasized that any deal must include cuts to discretionary spending next year and impose limits on spending growth in the future to curb the growth of US debt, which currently matches the nation's annual economic output.

Moody's, another credit rating agency, has indicated that it may reconsider its highest rating for the US government if lawmakers fail to reach an agreement.

How did It start Through CryptoKitties?

Zirlin started by greeting the host and the audience for their immense interest in knowing all about Axie Infinity. He thanked everyone for reaching out to him from the traditional gaming space and started telling how it all started through CryptoKitties. He talked about the huge potential within the NFT games segment. He unveiled that the majority of the Axie community consists of people from the CryptoKitties community because it was the time when people started to know about the blockchain community and CryptoKitties was the most prominent blockchain-based game at that time. He added that all early Axie members met while playing CryptoKitties. This included co-founders Sky Mavis, CEO Trung, and many others.

What is Axie Infinity?

According to Zirlin, Axie Infinity is a blockchain game. It allows the users to battle and collect adorable pets that are called Axies. He added that they have kept a precise balance between the in-game economy and supercharged it through blockchain resources that are ERC-20 tokens whereas the Axies are non-fungible tokens or NFTs. Along with that, they offer their own marketplace where users can find unique decks to exchange in-game resources. So, the basic idea behind this game is to introduce people to something new and based on blockchain

Game Design and Constant Iteration

The game runs on a card-based battle system like other famous games such as Pokémon. Each Axie has six different body parts corresponding to different cards that users can withdraw during battle. There are numerous body parts and combinations of Axies. Instead of requiring the users to make transactions and engage in auto-battle action, Zirlin came up with an idea to provide them with a more engaging and exciting game experience.

He infused real-time decision making and battling against opponents. After sampling and testing, the team of experts finally decided to go with the card battle system. He also revealed that his team is planning to release a whole new version of the battle system upgraded with new features which can also be determined as a new game experience.

What Is a Blockchain Game? A Mix of Social Network, Gaming and The Start of a New Economy

Zirlin answered the question by explaining that a blockchain game is a unique combination of fun and adventure that have deep roots in the digital economy space. He said, instead of game development, these games have emerged into a rapidly thriving market that focuses purposefully on allowing the in-game economy to prosper.

Compared to most traditional games where the real money is not encouraged, NFT games allow the autonomy to play with digital currency in the form of minting fees, incentives, etc. The core objective is to give rise to a peer-to-peer or player-to-player economy as large as possible. Similar to any other modern game that attempts to maximize the use of premium features for monetization, NFT games have revolutionized the segment with this new concept of the digital economy.

Why Is Crypto Important to Axie?

The global gamers community consists of billions of users. Some of them play for fun while some aim to gain global fame within the gaming segment. Compared to traditional games, NFT games involve cryptocurrency. It allows the users to not only play the game but also earn some potential money. It can be done without crypto but the various layers of decentralization and the centralization of the ownership allows 95% of the value flowing through the game goes directly to the player. Zirlin explained the relationship between the value of the game and the need for increased decentralization which indeed requires the use of blockchain in terms of monetization, security, and many other aspects.

Building and Relying on Your Community

Zirlin highlighted the importance of the community by agreeing with the fact that NFT game developers have to take good care of the game users’ demands and believe in continuous improvements and developments. If the developer is delivering something that accompanies the users’ dynamic needs, then it can transform into an overnight success. In the beginning, there were just hundreds of users and within three years Axie Infinity accounts for more than 680K users globally. By deploying their sidechain ‘Ronin’, Zirlin’s team was able to witness hypergrowth backed by the expansive scalability of the concept which was impossible without engaging with the community.

Is The Future of Gaming the Metaverse and User-Owned Assets?

Axie Infinity has taken gaming to a new level by introducing user-owned assets with their property rights based on Metaverse. According to Zirlin, it is a new genre of gaming that will allow a new type of gamers to gather under one roof just like PC games, console games, and mobile games. At the same time, this will continue to thrive as NFT games allow people to make money which is a great value addition. It will change the perception of many who believe that gaming is a waste of time.

The Feasibility of Crossover Between Games with NFT Ownership

Zirlin says that this unique idea of interoperability between different ecosystems has been around for a while and Axie brings the exclusivity to use different NFT assets in multiple games as they own them. The Axie ecosystem is like a theme park where every asset has a base value. Axie Infinity brings a unique game universe with different experiences and a unified type of NFT game asset that the users can use across other game experiences. It is more like cross-marketing or some kind of cross-pollination that allows users to interoperate their assets across multiple ecosystems.

Where Are Axies Users from and What Kind of Players Are They?

Zirlin said that he already had the idea that Axie is a community and cannot be just called a pool of gamers as it is more of a social network. Axie Infinity has users all over the world except the Central African Republic which makes it a geographically dispersed game. He also added that 60% of the users are from the Philippines, followed by North Americans, Europeans as well as a lot of users from developing markets. While explaining the types of players, he added that there are two types of users from those who want to play for fun to those who want to play and earn money.

What's Axie's Endgame?

Zirlin and his team believe that Axie is something that has brought complete freedom to a lot of people in terms of bringing a major societal change backed by this cute game that looks simple on the surface but gives a new concept and economic freedom to the gamers. According to him, if Axie can be called the Pokémon of blockchain then there is a lot more to come soon within this community-owned form of the game.
Thoughts On Competitors

In response to market rivalry, Zirlin said that he wants to see more experimentation in the games industry by testing new features, possibilities, and capabilities. He is motivated to test economic features within modern games through different types of NFT game crafting systems. He agrees that if it is the start then the industry requires new people as well to take part and contribute their expertise.

Generative Art and Creating an Axie

Axies have a breeding process and users can easily recognize their characters. As he mentioned earlier, it is super easy to create an Axie by using the various combinations of body parts that are available to the users. So, it is a kind of generative pet that comes in the form of the minting or bonding process which is a part of economic sustainability.

The co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin was invited by Bloomberg’s studio in which the purpose of this renowned blockchain was discussed. The episode started with the host providing short details about the inventor. The host Emily Wang questioned Vitalik about how he was able to come to this place and what fascinated him about Bitcoin. The guest replied that he had a great interest in math, cryptography, philosophy, politics, etc. and bitcoin is the fusion of all these topics. Thus, it sparked the interest of Vitalik and his father as well.

The host continued the conversation by revealing that Vitalik didn’t have enough financial means to mine the Bitcoin, so he ended up writing a whitepaper about Ethereum in 2013. She further asked what was the main vision to which the co-founder responded that everything started when he visited a conference in San Jose where he realized that people are leveraging this technology while there was a common question among everyone that we have Bitcoin but what’s next for cryptocurrency.

Vitalik Buterin was asked what is Ethereum and what makes it different from Bitcoin. He replied that Bitcoin has only one application and that is to use it as a currency while Ethereum is much more than that. People can build smart contracts using the programming language and others can easily interact with the dApps. Thus, it’s an open space for everyone to let out their creativity.

Next, it was discussed that can Ethereum become a threat to social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter as if they are built on Ethereum blockchain, then it would be owned by everyone. The guest replied that it can be a threat and opportunity as well because former CEO Twitter Jack Dorsey is looking forward to decentralized elements.

The host asked how he feels about being a well-recognized person behind the establishment of Ethereum. Vitalik stated that sometimes he wants to be less visible and Emily Wang further questioned other co-founders of Ethereum Anthony Di Iotio quitting crypto because of safety concerns. He was of the point that it has nothing to do with physical safety but he was tired of people annoying him due to which he prefers to wear a face mask in public.

When Vitalik was asked why he wanted Ethereum to be non-profit he replied that the decentralized technology should not be owned by anyone and that platform should be open for everyone. The topic of Vitalik’s tense reaction to Kim Kardashian about Ethereum Max was brought up to which he said that it was a scam project with no value at all so there were no reasons to back up such cryptocurrencies.

The issue of scalability was also brought up and Vitalik stated that the team has been working for 5 years and the scalability has been increased by a great margin. When it was about the comparison of Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake, he provided his insight that POS is much better because all it takes is a great number of coins and creates block while POW is much expensive as it requires high-end PCs.

ETH 2.0 which is a major upgrade to the blockchain was discussed to which Vitalik said that it will solve 2 major problems. The first one is that it will be shifted to POS so there won’t be mining anymore and the next thing is the merge in which applications built on POW will be shifted to POS so that they can keep operating seamlessly.

When the host asked Vitalik about the scams that have affected the image of Ethereum, Vitalik stated that crackdowns are in action and things are improving as it was before. He further said that there’s hope because mining is moving out of China reducing the hash rate of one country and the regulatory is also making exceptional efforts.

The founder of Ethereum was also questioned about cyber-attacks from Russia that are leveraging blockchains. He stated that we have to take the present scenario as a wake-up call and improve security now as it can lead to serious consequences in the future.

The duo started a conversation about the future of cryptocurrencies that mostly finance and NFT apps are built on blockchain. The only reason is that the current financial system is not up to the mark and blockchain has made it really easy for anyone to make desired transactions with utmost ease. Plus, the co-founder revealed that he is making the environment secure for users as they have to first make accounts before socializing on Ethereum’s blockchain.

Vitalik was also enquired about the future of crypto to which he replied that it is bright but with fads as there are some projects that are overhyped and may live for a short span of time. When the host asked him about the renowned personality from the financial world, he stated that the majority of them are mistaken about cryptocurrencies and underestimate this technology.

Vitalik Buterin was a pessimist about Jack Dorsey’s upcoming decentralized finance app built on Bitcoin. He believes that the co-founder of the CEO will have to build his system that will be owned by the Jack’s or participant’s wallet.

The host asked for Vitalik's insight on where the Ethereum will be in the next 5 to 10 years to which he replied that it has the potential to run Metaverse. When it was about Bitcoin replacing the US dollar, he believed that it was impossible because it’s not stable as forex so there’s no replacement but it has its unique applications.

Vitalik Buterin, who is also recognized for his funky t-shirts was questioned about the community engagement to which he replied that it’s healthy for the Ethereum environment to have fun.

As described by founders, SOL is a fast, cheap, and fully decentralized platform that has continued to boom globally. Yakovenko compared the speed of light which is around 110ms to travel halfway around the world with SOL’s block time latency which could be minimized to almost ¼ of where it stands today.

When it comes to the total number of transactions that this network processed, he said that there are almost 37.9 billion transactions. According to the Phantom Wallet’s data, there are around 1.26 million monthly active users on the Solana Network.

Next to speed and cost, the founders shed light on the network’s decentralization capabilities and told the audience that Solana runs on more than 2000 nodes around the world which is indeed a considerable but not a staggering number. They also showed their willingness to make it to 100,000 nodes in the near future. Along with that, they said that there are only two ways to meet this target which is through maximizing the cost to destroy all replicas and the cost to censor messages that arrive to all replicas in real-time.

The Solana Ecosystem

While talking about the Solana Ecosystem, Gokal brought unveiled that the system has been exploding across not only multiple but also every vertical on a global scale. He presented two unique infographics from March 2021 and October 2021 showing that the Solana Ecosystem is thriving at its best in the past months.

According to him, the two main reasons behind the rapid success of the ecosystem are unquestionably the growing interest in Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). As of Nov 2021, the total market value of SOL locked at $15.23B which is indeed an unimaginable amount compared to other platforms.

As per the data by Metaplex which is a decentralized open-source based web framework allowing artists and brands to launch their self-hosted NFT stores, there were almost 2.2 million NFTs created in 3 to 4 months or 80K NFTs made per day.

Stablecoin Support and the Global Pool of Solana Developers

Gokal and Yakovenko also appreciated the immense support given to Stablecoin by various centralized crypto exchanges. They were happy to mention that SPL Token received great support from the majority of exchanges making it possible for them to attract USDC and USDCT between the exchanges through the Solana Network. They presented a slide in which it was shown that only Huobi and Crypto.com were the only exchange that did not have USDT and Bitfinex without USDC.

In addition to that, Gokal said that all the Solana developers are putting great efforts and building real businesses. He highlighted the fact by presenting another slide of the Ecosystem growth during hackathons. The slide showed that the total number of projects formed dramatically increased during the hackathons. The founders also showed their willingness to reach the total number of Solana developers over a million shortly. By doing this, Solana will be able to serve more than 1 billion people using cryptography with the lowest cost and latency possible.

Investment Opportunities and The Future of SOL

Solana is considered one of the most distinguished networks when it comes to the total amount invested into it. While presenting key numbers, Gokal estimated that almost $2B of venture capital has been invested in the Solana Network by some of the world’s most renowned and established investors such as SocialCapital, FTX, a16z, coinbase, and many others. While looking at this, it can be easily concluded that this number will soon rise and reach new heights in the coming years.

Both Yakovenko and Gokal seemed pretty confident about the bright future of the Solana Network. They emphasized that the majority of technical and integral issues have been completely fixed and the network’s roadmap is streamlined to a huge extent. So, it is unquestionably true that SOL is on the verge of its success with NFTs and DeFi. In the end, they again appreciated the efforts made by the entire Solana community on a global scale.

What is Governance?

At this point, Polkadot was in the second phase of its launch and Gavin Wood’s team was able to gain 200 validators maintaining the network processing blocks and transactions. Governance is the next stage after having independent validators.

It is a detailed system of rules that allow making decisions and holding the participants being accountable. Governance is a set of defined rules and regulations that apply to all the participants. He says that decision in the context of technology typically means standards and protocols. When it comes to autonomous crypto-economic systems, some rules are algorithmic, absolute, and machine-executable whereas accountability is ensured through machine-readable signed statements and transactions.

According to him, it is all about rules over the system instead of rules within the system. He adds that rules over the system are the rules that allow altering the existing rules within the system just like a parliamentary democracy where people elect the representatives to take control and lead the rules of the house and even make amendments to them. His key focus is on determining the rules and laws that can change and the rules that aren’t able to do so.

Governance in Blockchain

As far as blockchain systems are concerned, Gavin Woods efforts revolve around identifying how blockchains can be used as means of evolving the existing rules and the nature of the logic within the system. He believes that the crypto economic systems will be sporing various other apparatus of the state.

It helps in preventing the corruption of the rules within the system. While explaining the concept of governance in blockchain he added that the modern crypto economic system will soon become new and autonomous states of the internet.

Decentralization of Crypto-Economic Systems

He said that decentralization of the crypto-economic systems will soon become the new form of the worldwide internet and governance is critically important to manage the outward relations. He further added a comparison between isolated states and trading states where the isolated ones tend to perform poorly in maintaining relationships with other states whereas the trading ones tend to have good relations that allow them to yield maximum benefits for each other.

Making Resources Work in The Interest of The System

Gavin Wood wanted to create decentralized governance in the crypto economic system that can speak for the aggregated blockchain state. Governance is critically important in terms of speaking out on behalf of the crypto economic system. Decentralized crypto economic systems control a huge number of transactions or activities that are hundreds of millions in total.

Gavin Wood said that just like blockchain isn’t the same as Bitcoin, autonomous governance is also isn’t the same as coin voting. He gave the idea of products and services that do not improve or enhance over time which results in a huge decline in their demand. On the other hand, products in the hardware industry constantly evolve. Keeping this in mind, it can be said that evolution is paramount to long-term viability and governance is the key element that ensures valuable evolution over time.

Traditional (Bitcoin) Vs. Metaprotocol (Polkadot)

The traditional model such as Bitcoin is very slow and fork off in different directions because governance fails to deliver right there as the stakeholders are unable to gather under one roof of stated rules. On the other hand, Polkadot is a Metaprotocol Model that is considered as the basic building block of decentralized governance.

It encompasses the very low and basic level of improvement which is all about the implementation of balances, accounts, the notion of transactions, governance, treasury, parachains, etc. All these elements fall on top of the underlying protocol which allows the platform to upgrade itself autonomously.

The Concept of Autonomous Governance in Polkadot

The entire concept revolves around the following three key elements:

Stake-Weighted Referenda

Polkadot allows arbitrary changes in the core blockchain and can be upgraded in arbitrary ways. This is evident from the fact that Polkadot already evolved from first chain candidate to proof of authority to proof of stake chain. Also, referenda allow the Polkadot network to evolve over time which can be started in three ways namely public referenda, unanimous council, and majority council.

Approval-Voted Council

Another approach to autonomous governance is the approval-voted council which is a body of delegates that have been voted by the token holders. They have the power to spend from the treasury, introduce votes, and elect one or more council members. The system allocates the votes according to an optimization mechanism to determine the most approved or elected council member. Councils can propose the referenda more quickly, ensure better and faster coordination, passes negative turnout and veto the proposals once.

Endowed Treasury

Treasury is a pot of money on the chain system which is fully controlled by the council and the majority of the council can spend that money. It is funded by the transaction fees and by the inefficiencies of the staking reward system. The treasury is designed to provide the governance apparatus and serves as an investment or improvement in the network, its ecosystem, its facilities. It can also be a fund to sponsor the software development or a fund to sponsor awareness education efforts. While talking about the total treasury available to Polkadot, Gavin Wood revealed that there are more than 40K dots already in the treasury which is indeed a substantial amount of cash to be spent.
