Google and Samsung have teamed up to unveil Android XR, a new version of the Android operating system designed for virtual and augmented reality devices. This development aims to open up a new chapter in immersive technology, allowing users to engage with apps and real-world elements using voice, motion controls, and eye tracking.

Redefining AR/VR Interaction

Android XR takes AR and VR experiences to a new level by integrating Google’s Gemini AI software, offering more intuitive and seamless interactions. Sameer Samat, Google’s president of Android Ecosystem, stated, “We’re at a turning point for XR, where advancements in AI create natural and user-friendly ways to integrate technology into everyday life. Partnering with Samsung, we’re building a new ecosystem with Android XR to transform computing on next-gen devices.”

Samsung’s first Android XR-powered device, Project Moohan, is a virtual reality headset with mixed reality capabilities through external cameras. Similar to Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest 3, Project Moohan sets the stage for a new wave of XR devices. Google also announced that other manufacturers would soon produce their own XR devices using Android XR.

Innovative Features of Android XR

Android XR’s interface bridges the virtual and physical worlds. Users can arrange app windows in a virtual environment while maintaining visibility of their surroundings through passthrough technology. The system also supports traditional devices like mice and keyboards, enabling users to work on expansive virtual screens.

Another standout feature is Google’s “Circle to Search,” which lets users highlight objects on a webpage with gestures to find more information through Google Search. For instance, a demo showed someone exploring a pair of soccer cleats online, spinning a 3D model of the shoes, and virtually visualizing them near their foot.

Voice controls powered by Gemini AI add to the ease of use, allowing users to navigate and interact with the XR environment through simple voice commands.

Expanding into Augmented Reality Glasses

Beyond headsets, Google’s vision includes augmented reality glasses. Learning from its earlier Google Glass attempt, the company is incorporating Gemini AI to make AR glasses more practical and user-friendly. These glasses are designed to assist with tasks like navigation, connecting with friends, and finding local information using in-lens displays and voice commands.

A demonstration highlighted how these glasses can recall details from the surroundings and provide real-time information. This aligns with features Google showcased earlier this year during its I/O conference, where the software could identify and interact with objects through a smartphone camera or smart glasses.

Challenges and Opportunities in AR/VR

The AR/VR market remains relatively small, with IDC predicting 6.7 million headset shipments in 2024, rising to 22.9 million by 2028. This is modest compared to the smartphone market, which shipped over 316 million units in Q3 2023 alone.

Tech giants like Meta are also exploring smart glasses. Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta glasses, equipped with cameras and AI assistants, have shown promise but are still early in their lifecycle.

The success of Android XR and its devices will depend on consumer adoption. As Google and Samsung innovate in the AR/VR space, the tech world will be watching closely to see how these advancements shape the future of technology.
