Google is revising its Play Store policy to broaden the inclusion of real-money gaming (RMG) apps. Initially introduced in 2021, this policy permitted RMG apps under government-regulated game types. The recent adjustment aims to encompass "game types and operators not covered by an existing licensing framework," enabling the addition of less popular or less regulated games.

Google's decision follows extensive pilot programs conducted worldwide since 2021. These programs, including tests in India featuring Rummy card games and Daily Fantasy Sports, helped shape the new policy. The updated rules will be enforced initially in India, Mexico, and Brazil, commencing from June 30. This move is anticipated to facilitate the release of current applications and other types of real-money gaming apps by operators involved in Google's pilot programs. Compliance with local laws remains a prerequisite for developers.

While the company expresses intentions to expand the availability of RMG apps in other regions, it emphasizes the retention of age requirements. Developers are still obligated to implement geo-fencing to ensure app availability only in legal jurisdictions. Google also disclosed its plans to evolve the service fee model for real-money gaming apps, aiming to support the Android and Play ecosystems. Notably, RMG apps, which currently cannot use Google Play billing, might witness a change in this aspect as Google explores new revenue-sharing structures.
