Instagram Rolls Out Teen Accounts to Boost Privacy and Protect Mental Health

Instagram has announced the launch of new safety measures designed to protect teen users, a response to increasing concerns over social media's impact on mental health. Starting immediately, users under the age of 16 will be automatically enrolled in “Instagram Teen Accounts,” which includes enhanced privacy and content controls. This move comes at a time when safeguarding teens on digital platforms has become a top priority.

New Features to Enhance Teen Safety

The Instagram Teen Account is equipped with several protective features aimed at limiting teens' exposure to inappropriate content and interactions. For starters, accounts will be set to private by default. This means teens must approve any new followers, and people who don’t follow them will be unable to see their posts. Additionally, teens will only be able to send direct messages to people they follow, ensuring greater control over who they engage with online.

One of the most important features introduced is the Sensitive Content Control, which prevents teen users from viewing certain types of content, such as violent posts or those promoting risky behaviors, in the Explore and Reels sections. Teens will also benefit from reminders designed to limit screen time, encouraging them to take breaks after 60 minutes of continuous use. A new Sleep Mode feature will mute notifications between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., helping teens disconnect and focus on rest, free from digital distractions.
