Iraq Takes Drastic Action: Telegram App Blocked Over Personal Data Violations and National Security Concerns
Ministry's Decision Aimed at Preserving Citizen's Privacy and Safeguarding National Security
Iraq's telecommunications ministry has made a significant move by blocking access to the widely used messaging app, Telegram. The decision comes in response to concerns surrounding national security and the mishandling of users' personal data, which the app had allegedly failed to address.
Telegram has been a favored platform for messaging, content sharing, and accessing news in Iraq. However, some of its channels contained vast amounts of personal information, including names, addresses, and family connections of Iraqi citizens.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Communications clarified that it had repeatedly requested the closure of channels that leaked official state institutions' data and citizens' private information. Regrettably, Telegram did not respond to these requests, leading to the ministry's decision to block access.
"While we respect citizens' rights to freedom of expression and communication, our primary duty is to protect the security of the state and its institutions," the ministry stated firmly.
The app's lack of action in addressing the personal data violations and the potential threat it posed to national security prompted this stringent action from the Iraqi authorities.
Despite numerous attempts to engage with Telegram, the company remained unresponsive. As the situation unfolded, the ministry determined that the app's continued operation posed a potential risk to citizen's privacy and national interests.
As of now, Telegram has not issued any formal response to the ministry's decision.
This move underscores the growing global concern over personal data security and its potential implications for national security. As more countries grapple with similar issues, it remains to be seen how tech companies will respond to such government actions and whether they will take more proactive measures to safeguard user data and address security concerns.
