Israel Revolutionary Fibre-Optic Link: Connecting Europe and Asia

Israel has unveiled its plans to construct a groundbreaking 254-kilometre (158 mile) fibre-optic cable, aiming to establish an uninterrupted connection between Europe and countries in the Gulf and Asia. The Finance Ministry confirmed the project, stating that the cable will be laid alongside the existing oil pipeline operated by state-owned energy group EAPC. The pipeline spans from the Mediterranean port of Ashkelon to Eilat on the northern Red Sea.

By leveraging this strategic infrastructure, Israel seeks to position itself as a vital communication land bridge, seamlessly connecting the Gulf countries and Asia to Europe. Itzik Levy, the Chief Executive of EAPC, expressed confidence in the project's potential to transform Israel's role in global connectivity.

The fibre-optic cable will be integrated with the existing subsea cables that extend to Israel's shores. As per the ministry's statement, the cable will be available for use by any licensed telecom company operating in Israel under a 25-year lease agreement.

Apart from the notable communication advantages, the deployment of the fibre-optic network along the pipeline's route will also serve an additional purpose. It will enhance monitoring capabilities to detect any terrain changes and promptly identify possible leaks, ensuring environmental safety.

This ambitious initiative marks a significant milestone for Israel as it endeavors to strengthen its position as a key player in the digital connectivity landscape, fostering greater global integration and facilitating seamless communication between Europe and Asia.
