Tesla is gearing up to introduce four new versions of its in-house battery technology by 2026, designed to power the highly anticipated Cybertruck, an upcoming robotaxi, and other electric vehicles. This move reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation in the electric vehicle (EV) market.

Currently, Tesla sources most of its EV batteries from external suppliers such as Panasonic Energy and LG Energy. However, the company is making strides to increase production of its 4680 battery cells within the United States. This strategy aims to lower costs and boost profit margins, ultimately enhancing the overall competitiveness of Tesla's electric vehicles.

Despite these efforts, developing the 4680 battery has not been without its challenges. During test production, Tesla has encountered significant losses, with reports indicating that 70% to 80% of the cathodes—a key component in creating energy for EVs—were lost. This is in stark contrast to traditional battery manufacturers, who typically experience losses of less than 2%.

In addition to the 4680 batteries, Tesla is working to scale up production of a dry-coated version of these cells. While this innovative approach holds promise, the company has faced difficulties regarding the speed of battery manufacturing. Tesla plans to incorporate the dry cathode technology into the Cybertruck batteries by mid-2025, with the ambitious goal of producing between 2,000 and 3,000 Cybertrucks each week using this cutting-edge method.

By 2026, Tesla aims to roll out four variations of the 4680 battery that utilize the dry cathode technology. One of these versions, designated NC05, will specifically power the robotaxi.

As part of its ambitious vision for the future, Tesla is expected to unveil its long-awaited robotaxi product soon. This development comes as the company shifts its focus toward AI-powered autonomous technology, responding to a recent slowdown in demand for battery-powered vehicles.
