Daze Messaging App: Gen Z's Creative Alternative to iMessage and WhatsApp Gaining Popularity Pre-Launch

Daze, a creative messaging app tailored for Gen Z, is generating significant buzz as it approaches its launch date. With its most popular TikTok video amassing an impressive 8 million views and nearly 48 million views across TikTok and Instagram combined, the app is capturing the attention of a younger audience eager for fresh ways to connect. Pre-launch, Daze has already attracted approximately 156,000 signups for its waitlist, highlighting the strong interest in this innovative platform.

What sets Daze apart is its approach to messaging. Unlike traditional apps like iMessage and WhatsApp, which limit users to standard text bubbles, Daze allows for a more dynamic and visually engaging messaging experience. Users can craft messages that resemble Instagram stories, employing a wide array of fonts, colors, graphics, and styles. This creative freedom means that conversations can feature multi-colored messages that float across the screen, accompanied by photos, stickers, GIFs, and customized backgrounds.

Founded by Willem Simons, a New York-based serial entrepreneur, Daze aims to make communication not just functional but also fun and artistic. Simons explained, “Our goal with Daze has been to create a fully-featured messenger that rivals iMessage and WhatsApp while incorporating enjoyable and creative elements. You can easily type a message and send it, or you can drag the message anywhere within the chat. It’s designed to be user-friendly while allowing for an unprecedented level of expression.”

Daze is not just about pretty messages; it is also leveraging the power of artificial intelligence to enhance its creative tools. The app's AI capabilities allow for features such as smart suggestions for stickers and graphics, making it easier for users to personalize their chats. Looking ahead, Simons revealed that they plan to integrate even more AI-based technology to further elevate the user experience.

This isn’t the first time Simons has ventured into the world of innovative messaging apps. He previously developed an app called Muze, which aimed to transform mobile messaging into a creative canvas. Although Muze had a similar vision, Daze marks a new chapter as it is solely Simons’ project, allowing him to refine his ideas and focus on delivering a unique user experience.

Initially conceived as a social calendar, Daze has pivoted into a full-fledged messaging app, built entirely in React Native to ensure a simultaneous launch on both iOS and Android platforms. The app is set to launch on November 4, following a period of early testing with around 1,400 invite-only beta users. Early feedback indicates that Daze is resonating well with its target audience, with reports suggesting that more than 50% of users who sent a message during the 60-day testing period continued to engage with the app.

The user demographic is primarily younger, with most testers falling within the 13 to 22 age range. This aligns perfectly with Daze’s mission to cater to the creative and expressive needs of Gen Z. Simons noted, “We wanted to create something that really speaks to the younger generation, allowing them to communicate in a way that reflects their personalities.”

Daze’s team, comprised of seven full-time members and one part-time employee, is largely based in New York, with a few team members working remotely. This close-knit team is passionate about creating a platform that empowers users to express themselves and communicate more freely.

In terms of financial backing, Daze has successfully raised $5.7 million in funding from an impressive roster of investors, including a16z, Kindred Ventures, Alpaca Ventures, Uncommon Projects, Betaworks, and Maveron. With such robust support, Daze is well-positioned to make a significant impact in the crowded messaging app landscape.

As the launch date approaches, anticipation continues to build around Daze. With its unique features, strong pre-launch interest, and the potential to redefine how young people communicate, Daze could very well become the go-to messaging app for Gen Z.
