Google Wallet Rolls Out In-Store Payments for Kids in Select Countries

Google has introduced a new feature that allows children with Android phones to make contactless payments using Google Wallet. This option is now available in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Spain, and Poland, offering kids a safe and convenient way to pay in stores while keeping parents in control.

How It Works

With parental approval, kids can add a debit or credit card to their Google Wallet for in-store payments. Parents will receive email notifications for every transaction their child makes, ensuring they stay informed about their spending.

In addition, Google’s Family Link app offers further oversight. Through Family Link, parents can:

• Track their child's recent purchases

• Remove payment cards when needed

• Disable Google Wallet access

What Kids Can and Can't Do

• Can Do: Kids can use Google Wallet for contactless payments in physical stores. They can also store digital passes like library cards, gift cards, and event tickets.

• Can't Do: Online purchases are not allowed through Google Wallet, keeping digital spending secure.

Simple Setup for Families

Setting up Google Wallet for a child is straightforward. Here’s how parents can get started:

1. Open the Wallet App: On the child's Android phone, launch the Google Wallet app.

2. Add a Payment Card: Tap on "Add to Wallet" and select "Payment Card."

3. Confirm Parental Approval: Parents will need to sign in with their Google Account to verify their identity.

4. Add a Card: After verification, parents can add a card for in-store payments.

Competing with Apple Pay

This new addition brings Google Wallet in line with Apple, which already provides a similar service through Apple Cash Family. With Google Wallet, families now have an alternative for supervised spending, making it easier to manage allowances and teach kids financial responsibility.

Future Expansion
