OpenAI Appoints Former U.S. Cyberwarrior Paul Nakasone to Board of Directors
Learn about OpenAI's appointment of former U.S. cyberwarrior Paul Nakasone to its board of directors and his role in enhancing cybersecurity measures.
OpenAI has announced the appointment of retired Army General Paul Nakasone, former commander of U.S. Cyber Command and director of the National Security Agency (NSA), to its board of directors. Nakasone's primary role will be to bolster cybersecurity efforts and protect OpenAI from increasingly sophisticated threats posed by malicious entities.
The decision to bring Nakasone on board follows a period of significant restructuring within OpenAI's leadership. The company faced internal turmoil last year, which led to the replacement of its board and the reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman following an external investigation that reaffirmed confidence in his leadership.
In addition to his board duties, Nakasone will head OpenAI's newly established safety and security committee. This committee is integral to advising the board on critical safety protocols and security decisions, taking over from a previous safety team that dissolved after key members departed.
Nakasone's distinguished career includes leading the Army branch of U.S. Cyber Command before assuming the roles of NSA director and head of U.S. Cyber Command under both the Trump and Biden administrations. His retirement earlier this year preceded his appointment to OpenAI, signaling the company's strategic focus on governance and operational resilience amid its rapid expansion in the artificial intelligence sector.
