OpenAI's ChatGPT app has been a huge hit globally, with over 110 million downloads since it came out in November 2022. But guess what? In a recent chat with Bill Gates, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman spilled the beans on his favorite app, and it's not ChatGPT!

On Gates's Unconfuse Me podcast, Altman revealed, "I wish I could say ChatGPT... and way more than email. The only thing that I was thinking possibly was iMessages, but yes, [I use Slack] more than that... I'm on Slack all day." Gates, on the other hand, sticks to the classics with Microsoft Outlook as his top pick.

Altman explained that Slack is his go-to for work coordination with around 500 OpenAI employees. Gates was surprised at the company's impact despite its relatively small size, especially with the rise of ChatGPT.

OpenAI, started eight years ago, has shifted from a non-profit research lab to a for-profit venture with an annual revenue of over $1.6 billion in 2023. Altman highlighted the age diversity at OpenAI, where employees are in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, breaking the mold of young tech startups.

Looking back on OpenAI's journey, Altman admitted they did things differently, like starting without a specific product idea. He drew from his Y Combinator experience, where he was president before becoming OpenAI's CEO in 2019. Altman emphasized understanding when and why to break the rules based on his Y Combinator insights.
