Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced a $120 million fund dedicated to teaching people around the world about artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at the UN Summit of the Future, Pichai described AI as one of the most important technologies of our time and stressed that everyone should have the chance to understand and use it, no matter where they live.

The new initiative, called the "Global AI Opportunity Fund," is designed to make AI education and training available to people everywhere. Pichai emphasized that this fund will work closely with local organizations and charities to ensure that AI learning reaches communities that might not have access to this kind of technology.

Pichai highlighted four key areas where AI can make a big difference:

  1. Helping People Access Information: AI can translate information into different languages, making it easier for people to learn and get the information they need in their own language. This can be especially helpful for those who don’t speak major global languages.

  2. Speeding Up Scientific Research: AI can assist scientists in making discoveries faster by helping them process large amounts of data more quickly. This means AI could play a role in finding solutions to complex problems, like medical research or environmental issues.

  3. Assisting with Natural Disasters: AI can be used to predict and track natural disasters, such as floods, hurricanes, or wildfires. This could provide communities with early warnings and help them prepare, potentially saving lives and reducing damage.

  4. Boosting Economic Growth: By making businesses more efficient and creating new opportunities, AI can help drive economic progress. It has the potential to open up new job opportunities and help businesses operate more effectively.

While Pichai highlighted the positive impact AI can have, he also pointed out that there are risks involved, such as the issue of deep fakes—videos or images that can be manipulated to spread false information. He didn’t go into detail about how AI might affect the environment but made it clear that the technology needs to be developed responsibly.

A major concern Pichai raised was the possibility of an “AI divide,” where some communities get left behind as others advance with AI. To avoid this, the fund aims to bring AI education to areas that need it the most, ensuring that people everywhere have the chance to learn and benefit from this technology.

Pichai also called for smart and balanced regulations around AI. He warned that strict rules or protectionist policies might limit AI’s benefits and prevent everyone from accessing its advantages.

This $120 million fund shows Google’s commitment to making AI education available to all and ensuring that this powerful technology can be a force for good, helping people in all walks of life to learn, grow, and make progress.
