Apple Launches Most Powerful Mac Studio Yet with M3 Ultra & M4 Max
Apple debuts its most advanced Mac Studio with M3 Ultra & M4 Max chips, delivering extreme power for professionals. Available March 12 with up to 512GB RAM.

Apple has supercharged its compact yet powerful Mac Studio with the latest M4 Max and M3 Ultra processors, making it the most advanced Mac ever. The upgraded Mac Studio delivers unmatched performance with increased unified memory and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity for ultra-fast data transfer speeds.
Designed for 3D artists, AI developers, researchers, and musicians, the Mac Studio isn’t aimed at mass-market consumers like the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. Instead, it’s built for professionals who need extreme computing power.
Mac Studio Pricing and Performance
Set for release on March 12, the Mac Studio with Apple’s M4 Max starts at $1,999, while the M3 Ultra-powered model comes in at $3,999. While the naming might be a bit confusing, the M3 Ultra is actually the more powerful chip, combining two M3 Max chips into a single package with a staggering 184 billion transistors.
The M3 Ultra features a 32-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine optimized for AI applications. It starts with 96GB of unified memory, with an option to upgrade to an unprecedented 512GB, alongside storage configurations reaching up to 16TB. To put that in perspective, 1TB equals 1,000GB. In a live demonstration, an M3 Ultra-equipped Mac Studio effortlessly handled a 3D development tool running alongside a 470-billion-parameter large language model (LLM), dynamically generating 1,000 assets in a 3D scene—all while playing the graphically intense game “Cyberpunk 2077” in the background. Despite the heavy workload, there was no slowdown, and the system’s cooling fans remained whisper-quiet.
M3 Ultra vs. M4 Max
The M3 Ultra delivers twice the performance of the M4 Max, but that doesn’t mean the M4 Max lacks power. It boasts a 16-core CPU, a 40-core GPU, and 36GB of memory, which can be upgraded to 128GB. Compared to its predecessor, the Mac Studio with the M1 Max, the M4 Max model is 3.5 times faster. In a separate demonstration, the M4 Max-based Mac Studio handled complex video effects rendering with ease, showcasing its efficiency and speed.
AI-Powered Mac Studio and Additional Features
Like Apple’s latest MacBook Air, which debuted alongside it, the Mac Studio is equipped with Apple Intelligence, the company’s proprietary generative AI platform. It includes advanced text summarization and editing tools, along with AI-driven photo editing features, enhancing user productivity.
One key consideration for buyers: the Mac Studio is a standalone desktop rather than an all-in-one system like Apple’s iMac, meaning users will need to purchase a separate monitor.
Will the Mac Studio Boost Apple’s Sales?
Despite its incredible power, the Mac Studio is unlikely to drive significant revenue growth for Apple’s Mac division, as most consumers prefer lightweight laptops over desktops. However, it is expected to strengthen Apple’s Mac lineup, which outperformed iPhone, iPad, and Wearables in year-over-year growth in 2024. While the Mac Studio may not be a mainstream hit, it solidifies Apple’s dominance in the high-performance computing space for professionals and creatives.
