Elon Musk’s xAI Hiring Thousands to Train AI Chatbot Grok
xAI is set to hire thousands of AI tutors to improve its chatbot, Grok. The expansion aims to boost AI training and stay competitive with OpenAI, Meta, and Google.

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, is gearing up for a massive hiring push this year, planning to bring in thousands of new workers to help train its chatbot, Grok. According to company employees, this move is part of xAI’s strategy to stay ahead in the AI race against competitors like OpenAI, Meta, and Google.
Expanding the AI Workforce
Currently, xAI employs over 900 data annotators, known internally as "AI tutors." These workers play a key role in improving Grok by training it to better understand language, images, and even voice commands. The company recently posted job listings for bilingual workers, as well as specialists in legal and STEM fields, indicating a focus on expanding its chatbot’s knowledge base.
Employees say xAI ramped up hiring ahead of the November presidential election and that managers have now confirmed plans for further expansion. The company did not respond to requests for comment.
The Role of AI Tutors
AI tutors at xAI are responsible for labeling and categorizing data, helping Grok learn to process and respond accurately to different types of information. Some tutors focus on refining the chatbot’s ability to generate images, while others work on improving voice recognition by testing the system in noisy environments.
A growing number of tutors are also helping Grok learn to summarize and analyze posts and images on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. This update rolled out in December, and xAI is now looking to expand training across multiple languages.
"Sometimes a project lasts for months; other times, you finish in a few days and are reassigned to a new task," one AI tutor explained. "It can be unpredictable."
Pay, Work Conditions, and Monitoring
xAI hires its AI tutors on six-month contracts as full-time hourly employees. Pay ranges from $35 to $65 per hour, and workers can be promoted to team leads within months. While most tutors work remotely, they are monitored using a system called Starfleet Academy, which tracks how much time they spend on tasks, their screen activity, and their work quality. Employees say tasks usually take between three and ten minutes to complete, and work is reviewed by quality assurance staff.
"Starfleet makes sure we’re not rushing through work," one tutor noted. "But after a while, flipping between different prompts can become repetitive."
Some workers say they are asked to justify their decisions, and they can receive lower ratings if quality reviewers disagree with their annotations.
The Growing Demand for Data Annotation
AI tutors make up the majority of xAI’s workforce, with the company having around 100 noncontract employees, including engineers and technical staff. Unlike many AI firms that outsource data annotation to third-party companies, xAI hires its tutors directly. Experts say this approach gives the company greater control over data security and annotation quality.
xAI is not alone in relying on data annotators. Musk’s electric vehicle company, Tesla, also employs in-house annotators to train its Full Self-Driving software. Other companies like Scale AI, Outlier.ai, and SuperAnnotate provide annotation services for tech giants such as Meta and Nvidia.
"The key to advancing AI is having vast amounts of high-quality data," said Stefano Ermon, a generative AI expert from Stanford University. "And that requires a large team of people to annotate it."
