TikTok Ban Threat: Creators Urge Followers to Connect on Instagram and YouTube
Facing a possible U.S. ban, TikTok creators ask followers to join them on Instagram and YouTube. Find out how this impacts creators and small businesses.
TikTok creators in the United States are asking their followers to find them on other platforms like Instagram and YouTube as the app’s future in the country hangs in the balance. This comes after a court ruled that TikTok could face a ban unless its parent company, ByteDance, sells its U.S. operations by January 19.
TikTok, which has 170 million users in the U.S., is especially popular with younger audiences thanks to its short, entertaining videos. It has also become a valuable platform for small businesses through its TikTok Shop feature. However, concerns about user data and the app’s Chinese ownership have led lawmakers to push for ByteDance to sell its U.S. operations or face a complete ban. The recent court decision has made the threat feel more real for many creators.
Creators Worried About Losing Their Platform
The possible ban has left creators like Chris Mowrey, who has 470,000 followers, concerned about what might happen. “For the first time, I’m realizing that a lot of what I worked for could disappear,” he said, adding that the ban could hurt small businesses and creators financially.
Chris Burkett, another creator with 1.3 million followers who shares men’s lifestyle content, is also doubtful about TikTok’s future in the U.S. In a video, he encouraged his followers to connect with him on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Threads. “We’ve spent years building our community here,” he said.
Food and travel creator SnipingForDom, who has nearly 900,000 followers, isn’t convinced TikTok will shut down soon but still told his fans to find him on Instagram as a backup.
Users and Businesses Await Clarity
The news has left many TikTok users feeling anxious and unsure. While some are preparing for the worst, others are holding off until there’s more concrete information. Sarah Jannetti, a consultant for TikTok Shop, said her clients aren’t making changes yet. “They’re waiting to see what happens,” she said.
What a Ban Could Mean
A TikTok ban would have a big impact, not just on creators but also on small businesses that rely on the app to reach customers. Many would have to start over on new platforms, rebuilding their communities and income streams from scratch.
With the January deadline approaching, creators are urging their followers to stay connected on other apps while they wait to see what happens. The outcome could have lasting effects on the social media industry and its users.
