Elon Musk's xAI Plans to Build Powerful Supercomputer for AI Chatbot Grok
Elon Musk's xAI plans to build a supercomputer for its AI chatbot Grok by 2025, partnering with Oracle and using powerful Nvidia H100 GPUs.
Elon Musk, the famous American entrepreneur, has shared exciting plans with investors about his AI startup, xAI. The company aims to build a supercomputer to power the next version of its AI chatbot, Grok, according to a report from The Information.
Musk hopes to have this supercomputer up and running by fall 2025. The report also mentioned that xAI might team up with Oracle to create this large-scale computer. Neither xAI nor Oracle has commented on this potential partnership.
The proposed supercomputer will use Nvidia's high-end H100 graphics processing units (GPUs). Musk told investors that this new system would be at least four times bigger than the largest GPU clusters available today. Nvidia's H100 GPUs are in high demand and are known for their strength in the AI data center market.
Musk started xAI last year to compete with major AI players like Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Google's AI projects. Interestingly, Musk also co-founded OpenAI.
Earlier this year, Musk said that training the Grok 2 model took about 20,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. He added that the next versions, like Grok 3, will need around 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs to handle their computing requirements.
