Oil, foreign buying and earnings
Market reports pointed to several supports for the rally. Brent crude, which fell about 7% on Monday as talks involving Iran and Qatari mediators raised hopes of an end to the conflict, traded near $105 a barrel on Tuesday, Moneycontrol reported. Lower oil prices reduce costs for India, which imports most of its crude.
Foreign portfolio investors were net buyers of ₹3,114.68 crore of Indian shares on Monday, according to provisional data cited by Moneycontrol and IIFL, while domestic institutional investors were net sellers of ₹392.20 crore, IIFL reported. Business Standard also cited strong September-quarter earnings and an unwinding of the global AI trade, while IIFL noted market talk of possible changes to long-term capital gains tax.
V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, said in comments to Moneycontrol that falling Brent crude, a weaker AI trade, good second-quarter results and foreign investors turning buyers were supporting the market. The rupee gained 12 paise to 94.72 per U.S. dollar in interbank trade, Moneycontrol reported.
SBI's quarterly results
State Bank of India, the country's largest lender, reported a 14.3% rise in standalone net profit for the July-September quarter to ₹23,038 crore, from ₹20,160 crore a year earlier, Business Standard reported. Net interest income rose 14.7% to ₹49,143 crore, and provisions fell 21.9% to ₹4,217 crore.
The profit included a one-time gain of ₹7,288 crore from the sale of a 6.30% stake in its asset management subsidiary, SBI Funds Management, through an offer for sale, NDTV Profit reported. Excluding that gain, profit was ₹15,750 crore, below the ₹22,619 crore analysts had estimated, according to NDTV Profit. Operating profit fell 1.4% to ₹26,937 crore.
Asset quality improved. The gross non-performing asset ratio fell to 1.39% from 1.73% a year earlier, and the net NPA ratio fell to 0.36% from 0.42%.
