Sensex, Nifty End Flat as Bank Stocks Weigh; Smallcaps Jump 2.7% and Tata Consumer Rallies 6.8%
The Sensex slipped 8.08 points to 73,598.67 and the Nifty ended at 22,749.75 on Oct. 27, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 2.7% and Jio Platforms prepared to list on Oct. 28.
India's benchmark equity indices finished almost unchanged on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, after a volatile session in which losses in large private and state-run banks offset gains in consumer, telecom and auto stocks. The 30-share BSE Sensex slipped 8.08 points, or 0.01%, to 73,598.67, and the NSE Nifty 50 eased 3.45 points, or 0.02%, to 22,749.75, BusinessLine reported.
The flat close followed Monday's rebound, when the Sensex gained 483 points to end a four-session losing streak. Smaller companies outperformed on Tuesday: the Nifty Midcap 100 rose 1% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 climbed 2.7%, Business Standard reported.
Breadth favored advancing stocks
Of 3,665 stocks traded on the NSE, 2,455 advanced, 1,103 declined and 107 were unchanged, ET Now reported. Twenty-eight stocks reached fresh 52-week highs, while 157 hit 52-week lows. The Midcap 100 rose for a second consecutive day, led by Mankind Pharma, APL Apollo and Bank of Maharashtra, while Ola Electric, OneSource and Acutaas were among the top gainers in the smallcap index, according to ET Now.
On the sectoral front, the Nifty Media index rose more than 3.6%, followed by pharmaceutical and consumer durables stocks, Business Standard said, with realty also among the outperformers. The Nifty Private Bank and Financial Services indices were the weakest groups.
Banks drag, Tata Consumer leads
The Nifty Bank index fell 0.7%, a decline of more than 350 points that took it below the 54,000 mark. AU Small Finance Bank, State Bank of India and IndusInd Bank were the biggest decliners in the banking gauge, ET Now reported. Among Sensex constituents, State Bank of India, Axis Bank, Tata Consultancy Services, Asian Paints, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank were among the main laggards, while Bharti Airtel, Trent, Maruti Suzuki and Power Grid were among the gainers, according to BusinessLine.
Tata Consumer Products was the top performer in the Nifty 50, closing 6.78% higher at ₹1,000 on the NSE against a previous close of ₹936.50, BusinessLine reported. The move followed second-quarter results released on Monday in which consolidated net profit rose 16% year on year to about ₹470 crore and revenue from operations increased 14% to ₹5,661 crore, The Economic Times reported. Consolidated EBITDA rose 18% to ₹794 crore.
The company said its India branded business recorded underlying volume growth of 11%, led by salt, whose revenue rose 15%. Its growth businesses expanded 40% and accounted for 38% of the India business, with Tata Sampann revenue up 57% and the ready-to-drink business up 47%. India tea volumes were flat. Standalone net profit, however, fell 14.9% to ₹242.81 crore even as standalone revenue rose 17%, BusinessLine reported. Goldman Sachs, Jefferies and Citi kept buy ratings on the stock while lowering their price targets, according to the same report.
"We delivered our second consecutive quarter of double digit revenue growth in FY27, backed by strong underlying volume growth in India business," Managing Director and Chief Executive Sunil D'Souza said, according to The Economic Times.
Oil, the Fed and foreign selling
Brent crude, the global benchmark, was little changed at about $115.8 a barrel, while foreign institutional investors sold equities worth ₹1,462.49 crore on Monday, according to exchange data cited by BusinessLine. The rupee opened at 95.17 per dollar, traded between 95.09 and 95.24, and closed at a provisional 95.12, up 3 paise from its previous close.
"Indian equities ended flat amid a volatile session, as elevated crude prices and caution ahead of the US Fed policy decision overshadowed supportive global cues," said Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments. "Healthy Q2 earnings and robust domestic flows continue to provide a cushion against persistent foreign selling. However, Brent above $115 and a weaker INR pose risks to inflation, corporate margins and financing conditions." The U.S. Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its policy decision on Wednesday, October 28.
Jio Platforms set to list on Wednesday
