Google to Build $850 Million Data Center in Uruguay to Drive Digital Growth in Latin America

Google has announced plans to build a second data center in Latin America, choosing Canelones, a city in Uruguay, for the new facility. The tech company will invest over $850 million in this project, highlighting its commitment to expanding its digital presence in the region.

This new data center in Uruguay will join Google's first Latin American data center, which opened in Quilicura, near Santiago, Chile, in 2015. Google initially invested $150 million in the Chilean facility and later added $140 million for expansion in 2018. These data centers play a vital role in supporting Google’s various services like Google Search, YouTube, and Google Cloud for millions of users across Latin America.

Google hopes the new data center in Uruguay will make a big difference for the local economy and help develop technology across the region. "We hope our new data center in Canelones will be a significant contribution to the professional and technological development of Uruguay and the entire region," the company said in a blog post. This project is expected to create new job opportunities, boost local skills, and improve digital infrastructure in Uruguay and its neighboring countries.

Google's Growing Global Network

Beyond Latin America, Google is also expanding its data centers in other parts of the world. The company is reportedly considering building a large "hyperscale" data center near Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, which could be ready by 2027. This would be a significant addition to Southeast Asia, aimed at meeting the growing need for digital services in the region.

Earlier this year, Google announced a $3 billion investment to build a data center campus in Indiana, USA, and to expand other sites in Virginia. In May, Google also shared plans to invest $2 billion in Malaysia to create its first data center and Google Cloud region there. These efforts show Google's aim to strengthen its digital infrastructure worldwide and support the digital growth of various markets.
